Is Silverlight even more redundant?

Adobe lifted the licensing restrictions on the SWF format, meaning it’s now possible for 3rd parties to write their own SWF compilers. Couple this with a nigh omnipresent player-penetration rate, and I think it’s safe to ask, why would anyone try to challenge SWF supremacy?
